Firefox Performance Tuneup Tricks

Do you use Firefox browser? It's a more stable browser than Internet Explorer.

Dave gave some performance enhancing tips here. For example:

Type "about:config" in Firefox address bar.

- Set "network.http.pipelining" value to "true"
- Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
- Change “network.http.pipelining.maxrequest”” to a number around "30". This indicates that the browser will attempt to make up to 30 requests to the server at one given moment.
- Finally, you need to add in a variable to the list. In order to do so, right click and select "new --> integer". A menu will popup asking for you to enter the name of this integer. Enter "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This tells the fox not to wait on displaying the data that it has received from the server.

How To Be Notified When Google Indexes Your Site

Released yesterday, the Google Index Notification (GIN) tool lets you keep track via email of what specific pages Google has indexed on your site.

Free to download, GIN shows you precisely which Web pages are actually being indexed by the Google spider and notifies whoever you want in near real-time.

Created by JRBTECH, GIN provides a useful feature for those who are publishing new sites and needing to promptly know when Google starts to indexing their site.

Setup is very easy: just include a call to a small PHP script inside your HTML code and you are up and running.

If you are a blogger or a user of a full-fledged CMS you should include this call to the GIN PHP script inside your template files.

The "nofollow" Tag

Google has introduced a new link tag, and it's ultimately designed to tell the search engines to ignore the link when it comes to calculating their algorithm. This new link tag is called rel="nofollow" and it can be added to any typical href link. By adding the tag to a link on your site, you're telling the search engines to ignore it. According to Google, "From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel="nofollow") on hyperlinks, those links won't get any credit when we rank websites in our search results."

Yahoo!, MSN Search, and other search engines are taking Google's lead and beginning to recognize this new link tag called the (rel="nofollow") tag.

Are you buying text links? Watch out!

Brad Fallon, author of Stomping the Search Engines, posted this article about Google's new link trap:

"Recently, Google has been knocking (often highly ranked) pages out of the top 1,000 for certain keywords. One minute you're on the first page, and the next day, you're gone.

Ironically, the problem appears to be having too many of the wrong kind of links. I want to share these observations with you and tell you how to avoid this 'Link Trap' disaster."

What is this Instant Buzz?

I heared quite few people talk about Instant Buzz at a marketing forum, some people are saying they are getting good results with this software in getting leads and sales.

So I signed up, will look into it more. Currently it's by invitation only.

They have a very active user forum, as of this writing (12/17/04, 1:30 pm PST), there are already 7615 total posts (581 new posts in the last 24 hours), amazing.

Here is what it says inside member area about how it works:

3 Ways to Earn Advertising Credits

You'll earn Advertising Credits in three different ways.
What's an Advertising Credit?
If you have 5 Advertising Credits that means that your text ad will appear on someone else's Instant Buzz bar 5 times.

1. Personal Surfing Points
You earn Advertising Credits for your personal surfing habits.

Every time you visit a new web page a new ad is displayed in your Instant Buzz bar and you earn 0.1 Advertising Credits.

For example, if you visit 100 pages in a day (which is easy to do) you will earn 10 Advertising Credits.

2. Direct Referral Points
For every person who you personally refer to join Instant Buzz, you will earn 0.1 Advertising Credits every time they visit a new web page.

For example, if you refer 10 people and they visit 100 pages per day, you will earn 100 Advertising Credits per day.

Use Google as a Writing Tool?

Stephen Dean posted something interesting on Blaker forum:

Try putting these keywords into google:

your_topic "money back"

Replace your topic with whatever the subject happens to be, recipes, magic tricks, dieting - whatever. Then in quotes put "money back." Google will search for that exact phrase.

"Money back" is uncommon enough for most web pages, but it's EXTREMELY COMMON in sales letters. So what Google will return for you is nearly every sales letter for your topic listed on google.

Try those out and see what you think.

Google Suggest - Search Innovation

Google is testing a new interface for their search engine that they're calling Google Suggest.

One of the problems for many users of Google has been the huge number of results returned including ones that apparently had nothing to do with the original request. Other search engines have taken the approach of gathering what they feel are related results together to try and assist the searcher. Google Suggest is Google's shot at it.

The interface looks the same as it does currently - simple, stripped down and functional - but as you type in your search term, a drop-down box shows a number of suggestions based on what you have entered. It also lists the number of search results would be returned, giving a further guide to searchers.
